John Paul and John Paul Mitchell Systems® are working with the Mineseeker Foundation to sponsor a prosthetics donation program to bring new life and hope to landmine victims of all ages. Maria Gulele, 37, a hairdresser in Mozambique, is among the first recipients of a new pair of prosthetic legs from DeJoria and John Paul Mitchell Systems®, replacing her legs lost as a child during the 1970s civil war. Captured by rebel soldiers to act as human shields and living landmine detonators, Maria was one of the young victims of the war, stepping on a landmine and losing both of her legs.
During Maria’s rehabilitation, she took up the art of hairdressing and braiding for local clients in her village to support her two children. After years of sitting in blistering heat on the sand floors outside her hut doing hair, local philanthropists helped her secure a building to set up her own hair salon in 2005. DeJoria was introduced to Maria during a Mineseeker visit to her village in 2007. On behalf of Paul Mitchell® hair stylists worldwide, he is now sponsoring Maria’s prosthetic limb operation and recovery so that she may walk again with two new legs and share her story of courage and warmth to stand as a symbol of hope for landmine victims worldwide. |
